Montmartre’s best kept secret, le Clos Montmartre vineyard is tucked away quietly in the shadows of the Sacré-Cœur.

The city of Paris’ urbanisation of Montmartre in the early 20th century was a cause of concern to many locals. A group of local artists, led by Francis Poulbot lobbied the government for a piece of land destined for property. In 1933, the government granted their request and the Clos Montmartre was born.

The Clos covers a modest 1556 sqm and produces an annual harvest of 1500 bottles of pinot and gamay every year. The wine is fermented in the basement of the local town hall and then sold at the annual Fête des Vendanges. This is the only opportunity to buy the local wine, which has become a collectors item. Tourists can visit the secret vineyard during the festival or arrange a tour with the local Montmartre tourist office. The tour of the oldest vineyard in Paris is free but you can pay extra for a taste.

The vineyard is a hidden treasure of the historic area and a surprise to many passers by. You won’t find it listed in any guides but the local vineyard and festival is an ode to bohemian Montmartre. Local artists design the labels and the festival takes on a theme attached to the local area.

Tourists looking for the vineyard will find it nestled between the Musee du Montmartre and the legendary cabaret Lapin Agile. You can similarly see the grape harvest from the popular Petit Train de Montmartre.
