The historic village of Montmartre might be part of one of the world’s major cities, but ask any local and they’ll tell you it’s its own universe. So, it only makes sense that it has its own public bus, exclusively for the transport around the hill.

Previously called the ‘Montmartrobus’, the RATP (Paris public transport) recently renamed the service. It is now known as the er, number 40. Uninspiring as the name change was, the service still follows a charming route of some of Paris’ most legendary spots.

The line was extended in early 2019 to include parts of the 9eme arrondissement. However, if you just want to use it as a cut price tour of Montmartre, you can! Pick up the bus from the metro station Pigalle, to start your journey at the bottom of the famous hill.

From Pigalle, the 40 takes you on a winding tour of the famous hill, passing through the picturesque place des Abbesses. The journey continues up the infamous Rue Lepic, once home to Van Gogh and Willette, before arriving at Place du Tertre. The workplace of Montmartre’s painters and Espace Dail, the quaint square is the heart of the area.

The bus the circles around the the front of the magnificent Sacré-Cœur cathedral -where you might want to get of. The highest point in Paris, it has the best views of the city from its famed steps.

However, if you want to discover the rest of Montmartre, where the Montmartrois live, stay on the bus. The 40 continues its route through the quiet streets of Lamark, Custine and Marcadet; before turning back around at the town hall of the area and heading back around.

And best of all…

The 40 is not a tourist bus, so has the same fixed tariff as the other buses, 1.90€. This makes it the cheapest option to visit the area while still sitting down!

For our guests, you can pick up the number 40 a few metres from our hostel. Book now to join us and discover Montmartre on your doorstep.
